Westpoint

Last weekend Bryan and I headed out of the city to visit one of his high school friends, Danielle. We had a fantastic time. She and her children took us on a tour of Westpoint. Westpoint is the oldest military academy in the US. It was created after the war revolutionary war, around 1783.

Westpoint is academy for officers-in-training (not the foot soliders) so it is like the place that Richard Gere went to in "An Officer and a Gentleman". It is a beautiful place where you need to know someone who has access to the facility to get in. It is just like a little village, they have their own hospital, convenience stores, 4 places of worship.

The name of this Major General was removed  by an unknown person.
The name that was meant to be here was that of Benedict Arnold (he was a traitor during the revolutionary war).
Some of the famous names to come out of Westpoint were Ulysses S Grant and Robert E Lee (commanders in the American Civil War) Douglas MacArthur (played a prominent role in the Pacific during WWII), George S Patton (Commander of the army during WWII), Dwight Eisenhower (34th President of the United States).

Housing for the Generals at the academy

Different housing at Westpoint.

More housing.

How nice are the houses. Wouldn't mind living in any of the above houses.

The different types of canons used during the revolutionary war.
These are canons that were actually used during the war. If you get up close you can see scratches,
bumps etc from the war.

A soldier getting married. It was a beautiful day.
Still within Westpoint Danielle and the kids took us up the the new Cadet Chapel and it was stunning. It's claim to fame is that it has the biggest pipe organ in the world. Danielle's husband Peter has on occasion played it - he is a full time organist at Westpoint.
